Taiga's temperature has very different ranges according to the seasons. In winter there is heavy snowfall very often and the average
temperature is -14 degrees. There aren't many clouds in this region, so when the sun goes down the temperature drops very quickly especially in the winter. In summer it is very humid and rainy and the average temperature 64 - 72 degrees. Also, it only gets sunny enough
to melt the ice covered ground and allow plants to grow besides the thick trees that last throughout the whole winter. Annually there is
about 33 inches of rainfall.
ADAPTATIONS:
* Trees have hick, waxy needles to prevent evaporation because the water is frozen the majority of the year.
* Animals such as bears, lynxes, and beavers have thick fur to keep them warm in frigid winter months.
* Some plants seeds are in the form of cones or needle leaves because they need to be tough to withstand the winter months
* Many trees have downward sloping branches so the snow can fall off without breaking the branches.
* Animals like the bear hibernate through the winter so they don't have to be out in the cold.
ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS:
Why would it be helpful for a tree in the taiga region to have waxy needle-like leaves?
What type of adaptations does a moose have to survive in this region?
Why would a snake not thrive well in this region?
