Deciduous Forests

Climate
The average temperature within this biome differs throughout the year due to its four distinct seasons, but they are all relatively around 50 degrees.
Precipitation is often at a constant, steady rate throughout the year, with an average of 30-60 inches per year.
Animal Adaptions:

Animal Adaptions:
- Squirrels/chipmunks have adapted to use food storage as a way to feed themselves during the winter months. The cold weather around them prevents the nuts and seeds hidden in the trees.
- The Japanese Snow Monkey grows a heavy, insulated coats during the winter and sheds to much lighter fur coats during the summer
- Bird Species have adapted to migrate towards warmer areas each year during the colder months
- Many animals in this area have adapted to hibernate during the winter. Some smaller animals create tunnels or holes in the ground to conserve heat and also use it to find other animals smaller than themselves to eat.
Assessment Questions
Do you think that the Deciduous Forests are similar to where we live? Why or why not?
Small animals usually burrow in the ground during the winter and use other linking tunnels to find other animals to eat. Why do you think a snake would use this technique?
Why do you think the Japanese Snow Monkey would need to grow such heavy insulated coats of fur?
